On the 18th of January, Beyond Extreme Energy and others fighting against fracked gas pipelines, fracking, and eminent domain posted their demands on the walls of FERC shortly before the agency's monthly meeting.

Jewish activists take over Russel building rotunda demanding clean DREAM act

On the 17th of January, several dozen Jewish activists were arrested after staging a civil disobedience in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building. Under the tagline #letmypeoplestay , they were demanding that Congress pass a clean DREAM act to protect undocumented migrants brought to the US by their parents as children.

On the 15th of January, Black Lives Matter DC marched in the annual DC MLK day parade. Black Lives Matter DC also had the honor of being selected as grand marshalls in the parade this year.

ICE raid on Mt Pleasant 7-11 no-show after activists mobilize

On Jan 11, 2018, multiple sources reported that ICE was planning to raid the Mt Pleasant 7-11 the next day. People showed up in shifts to monitor the situation throughout the day, but ICE never showed up. Word of the planned raid had leaked the previous evening, coming to the attention of migrant rights, anti-racists, and anti-fascist groups. Protest against GITMO on 16th anniversary of opening leads to five arrests

On Jan 11, protesters marked the 16th anniversary of the opening of Gitmo with a protest in front of the White House,. They found Penn Ave closed (as usual) so they held a tea ceremony for the current 41 detainees on the park side sidewalk. Afterwards, five people marched into the prohibited zone in an act of civil disobedience and were arrested.

Environmentalists rally in Annapolis for 50% renewable energy mandate

On the 10th of January, environmentalists gathered in Annapolis, MD to demand that the General Assembly pass the Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2018, mandating that 50% of energy used in the state come from renewables such as solar and wind. The existing Clean Energy Jobs Act calls for 25% renewables by 2020, now climate, environmental justice, and faith activists are asking the state to double down with 50% by 2030.

Breaking: ICE Gestapo descends on 7-11 stores, including in DC

On the 10th of January, ICE agents descended on about 100 7-11 stores in a coordinated attack aimed at "interviewing" worker and delivering some kind of audits or "notices of inspection." Fortunately, only 21 arrests came from the entire sweep. Stores were hit in D.C., Maryland, Indiana, Illinois,California, Florida, Missouri, and elsewhere.

Black Lives Matter distributes Smartrip cards to protect needy Metro riders

On the 8th of January, Black Lives Matter activists instituted the "Swipes on Us" program, distributing preloaded Smartrip cards at the Anacostia Metro station to riders who otherwise would have had to risk confrontations with Metro management over no longer accepted negative balances when exiting at the other end.

It’s whisper quiet in the museum as I pull open large windowed doors to what used to be the campus laundry.  The century-old brick building served Tuskegee Institute students and faculty in a utilitarian way for decades until, in 1941, it was turned into a museum to honor George Washington Carver; a memorial to what can be accomplished with intellect, imagination and integrity.

Protesters at White House after Trump cancels TPS for Salvadorans, 250K+ face deportation

On the 8th of January, Donald Trump's Homeland Security secretary Kisstjen Nielson announced that Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran immigrants is being terminated. Now an estimated quarter million people risk deportation after Sep 2019, the formal end date for TPS. As word of this racist decision spread, protesters gathered at the White House.
