Smithsonian Police harass Black Lives Matter activists at Atatiana Jefferson Vigil

On the 16th of October, Black Lives Matter activists showed up at the Museum of African-American History on the Mall to hold a vigil honoring Atatiana Jefferson, who was shot by a Texas cop while playing video games in her own home. Smithsonian Police became quite aggressive in demanding one activist move her car, but finally backed off when their own behavior was cited as a reason the activist in the car would NOT leave, for fear of leaving others at risk from the same cops.

DC Abolition Coalition locks down at DOJ against prison horrors

On the 1st of October, protesters from the DC Abolition Coalition (prison abolition) locked themselves to ladders blocking all the vehicle driveways into or out of the Dept of Justice. Police used power tools recklessly and shook ladders while cutting them out of the 9th st side of the lockdown. They also threatened to knock out an African-American woman on top of one of the ladders.

DC protest against prison slavery in Alabama invokes Attica uprising

On the 20th of September, relatives and former prison inmates from Alabama backed by DC area activists held a rally in Pershing Park demanding that the Dept of Justice sue the Alabama Dept of Corrections over prison slavery as well as assaults and murders by guards. The main banner had the slogan "We Are Men" used in the 1971 Attica prison Uprising (mens' prison) to indicate inmates were people not animals on somebody's factory farm.

Decarcerate DC protest held against US atty's fanatical opposition to Second Look Amendment Act

On the 5th of September, US Atty for DC , Jessie K. Liu (a Trump appointee) held an ostensably public meeting aimed at sabotaging and undermining the DC Council's Second Look Amendment Act. Outside, DC residents and representatives from Black Lives Matter held a protest as the meeting was limited to hand-picked residents. Liu's staff told members of the public the meeting was "for elected officials only."

US Park Police entrap, arrest Gay men in Malcolm X Park

For decades Malcolm X Park has been a popular cruising area for Gay men, mostly men of color. Since August 2018, US Park Police have been entrapping and arresting Gay men there, using 1950's style tactics including directly propositioning their targets. This and police raids on Gay bars were the factors that led to the Stonewall Riot, a three day uprising in which NYC's police were soundly defeated. It has the potential to lead at any time to violent confrontations beyond what police expect, as they found to their sorrow on June 28, 1969. The GLBTQ community has refused to tolerate this kind of assault since Stonewall.

Tisha B'Av Protest Against Howard County Contract with ICE

Never Again Action, Jews United for Justice, Truah, CASA and other human rights activists marched to the Howard County Detention Center and risked arrest protesting Howard County's contract with ICE.

According to a Jews United for Justice Facebook post, "County Executive Ball has already indicated a willingness to "reexamine" the intergovernmental service agreement (IGSA) that Howard County has with ICE."

McAuliffe's book tour faces second round with Cville survivors at National Press Club

On the 6th of August, former VA Governor Terry McAuliffe's "Beyond Charlottesville" book tour returned to DC. The big question going in was just how much he would stink up the National Press Club by evading survivor's questions. This time the moderator did her best to hold the former Governor to the questions, but at one point survivors did have to interrupt him. Afterwards, one of the car survivors called McAuliffe an "artful dodger."

On the 9th of July, the DC Chapter of the global Extinction Rebellion movement marched on the US Capitol to support a climate emergency resolution introduced by Sen Bernie Sanders and Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.The march faced considerable harassment by US Capitol Police.

 "Hate has no home here" was the message as All Out DC and Black Lives Matter DC, despite massive police presence, barricades, and stifling heat,  overwhelmed the the tiny white supremacy rally with freedom, solidarity, and music.

DC to be left holding the bag for Trump's July 4 security costs

On the 4th of July, Donald Trump plans to speak at the Lincoln Memorial,effectively turning July 4th into a MAGAT-infested campaign rally for his re-election plans. This has created a financial problem for DC, as "security" costs will run into the millions. The Washington Post reports that Trump and the Federal government never paid DC back for all those riot cops and prosecutors needed to "secure" J20, and now Trump wants to go again. The Federal government also has stopped paying into the "security" fund DC will have to dip into to cover all these unpaid bills.
