Black Lives Matter blocks streets, chases cops off NY Ave for Terrence Sterling

On the 3rd of October, Black Lives Matter activists swarmed onto NY Ave from 3ed and M st, and blockaded it in memory of Terrence Sterling. Two burning torches were in the march and smoke rose from sage smudging the area. When police ordered the blockade to disperse, people responded by advancing on the cops, who retreated with the crowd in pursuit. Cops by this means were able to lead the crowd off NY Ave, only to kick off a long march that blocked many streets.

DC Standing Rock Solidarity presentation from front lines: protesters sprayed from aircraft with chemicals

On the 28th of September, several activists who have been at Standing Rock recounted their experiences at St Stephens to the beginnings of the DC Standing Rock Solidarity group. They recounted the experiences at camp and gave an update on the legal status of the pipeline, in which the segment crossing the Missouri River is on hold due to legal cases concerning the river crossing and the Historic Preservation Act. They also mentioned new and ugly developments today in Standing Rock, where again loaded guns were pointed at water protectors-and an aircraft sprayed tear gas on their totally nonviolent corn planting ceremony. In addition 21 people were arrested.

Prisoners nationally have gone out on a work stoppage on Friday, Sep 9. Prisoners in MD at Jessup state prison and Cumberland Federal prison, and in VA at the Red Onion, Buckingham, and Fluvanna state prisons and are participating in the work stoppage. FOX News calls for return of overt jump-outs with departure of former police chief Lanier

On the 1st of September, Fox 5 News broadcast one of their incessant "crime news" stories, this one about a shooting in DC. FOX went well beyond covering this young man's death, they went into his neighborhood seeking anyone who they could induce to say on camera that they wanted the incoming police chief to bring back "plainclothes vice squads." These squads are known as "jump-outs" and are infamous for stopping and forcibly searching all young African-American males on a block if any crime by anyone is observed. Police deny they now exist but this sort of harassment is still pervasive in many parts of DC. A key demand of Black Lives Matter in DC has been to total and complete elimination of police jump-out squads. The FOX broadcast carefully avoided the words "Jump-out" as well as "Black Lives Matter" even while covering a non-police involved shooting.

Security violently removes animal rights protesters from Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

On the 21st of August, plainclothes security guards forcibly removed a number of animal rights activists from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception after they began a "vegan outreach" protest/speakout. As soon as they got outside the door they became violent enough to inflict bruises, knocking down the activist using the camera. The camera stopped when it hit the ground. Not knowing the camera had stopped, the woman using it turned it on one of the guards while he was boasting "yeah I assaulted you" to another activist. The camera still some of what that same guard was boasting about, meaning his "testimony" isn't needed anyway.

Reportback from Black August Town Hall

A Black August town hall at a church in NW DC on August 20th generated some very strong suggestions on what it will take to hold racist officials and killer cops responsible for their crimes. One speaker during the "aggressive protests and public relations" panel said getting the government to pay attention (at the Cabinet level) to say, anti-TPP protests would require shutting down the Port of Baltimore and all traffic on I-95 in both directions. In the final panel one speaker warned that both the 1st and 2nd Amendments are being ignored by police and courts where African-Americans are involved.
