ICE raid on Mt Pleasant 7-11 no-show after activists mobilize

On Jan 11, 2018, multiple sources reported that ICE was planning to raid the Mt Pleasant 7-11 the next day. People showed up in shifts to monitor the situation throughout the day, but ICE never showed up. Word of the planned raid had leaked the previous evening, coming to the attention of migrant rights, anti-racists, and anti-fascist groups. Protest against GITMO on 16th anniversary of opening leads to five arrests

On Jan 11, protesters marked the 16th anniversary of the opening of Gitmo with a protest in front of the White House,. They found Penn Ave closed (as usual) so they held a tea ceremony for the current 41 detainees on the park side sidewalk. Afterwards, five people marched into the prohibited zone in an act of civil disobedience and were arrested.

Breaking: ICE Gestapo descends on 7-11 stores, including in DC

On the 10th of January, ICE agents descended on about 100 7-11 stores in a coordinated attack aimed at "interviewing" worker and delivering some kind of audits or "notices of inspection." Fortunately, only 21 arrests came from the entire sweep. Stores were hit in D.C., Maryland, Indiana, Illinois,California, Florida, Missouri, and elsewhere.

Black Lives Matter distributes Smartrip cards to protect needy Metro riders

On the 8th of January, Black Lives Matter activists instituted the "Swipes on Us" program, distributing preloaded Smartrip cards at the Anacostia Metro station to riders who otherwise would have had to risk confrontations with Metro management over no longer accepted negative balances when exiting at the other end.

Protesters at White House after Trump cancels TPS for Salvadorans, 250K+ face deportation

On the 8th of January, Donald Trump's Homeland Security secretary Kisstjen Nielson announced that Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran immigrants is being terminated. Now an estimated quarter million people risk deportation after Sep 2019, the formal end date for TPS. As word of this racist decision spread, protesters gathered at the White House.

Remembering Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr (video)

On the second anniversary of the execution of Shia civil rights and democracy activist Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by the Saudi Arabian government, his god-son Mustafa and a colleague drove from Michigan and joined Code Pink to protest in front of the Saudi Arabian embassy. Despite a wind chill in the single digits, the late Sheikh's voice filled the street in a reminder of the continuing human rights abuses against Shia citizens in Saudi Arabia.

Riders OBJECT to proposed DC Circulator route changes to favor private business over other riders

On the 4th of January, riders of the DC Circulator objected at a public hearing to proposed April 2018 "major service changes" that would favor upscale development on the Potomac Waterfront over existing bus riders and over nonprofit and governmental agencies and their workers.

The hypocrisy of Trump on Protests in Iran vs protests of his inauguration

As 2017 faded into 2018, Donald Trump tweeted messages of support for protesters in Iran, where protests over price increases have escalated into street fighting and broader antigovernment demands. The scenes from Iran being played on US corporate news TV look a bit like footage from the protests of Donald Trump's own Inauguration. Of course, Trump is tweeting support for one group of protesters while trying to have 188 people sent to prison for up to 65 years for protesting him.
