DC government raids Va Ave tent city for second time

On the 3rd of December in mid-afternoon, a trash truck and work crew were seen at the former Va Ave/Rock Creek Parkway tent city site. No tents remained and what appeared to be people's belongings were being loaded into the trash truck. It appeared that all campers had been driven off earlier in the day. A few days ago, twelve campers were reported to be still waiting for city promised apartments, unknown if every camper got one or not.

If anyone has been evicted from the underpass without getting an apartment, Mayor Bowser's DPW has denied homeless people access to overhead cover from rain and snow just as winter is beginning. If everyone got an apartment, we now know a way to force even DC's Wal-Mart loving, pay-to-play(as in Exelon/soccer stadium) Mayor Bowser to provide housing. If the latter, the use of high profile tent cities to shame the government into housing the homeless has a precedent in the 2000-2002 activites of Homes Not Jails DC. Homes Not Jails staged multiple high-profile, public squats of then-abandoned housing. Every time, the families or individuals the houses were taken for were offered housing at city expense with the objective of leaving Homes not Jails with "a squat full of white kids." That never worked as there were always more folks needing housing. Similarily, the Tent City in Rock Creek may well rise again.
