The Shortwave Report 04/27/18 Listen Globally!
Dear Radio Friend,
This week's show features stories from Spanish National Radio, Radio Havana Cuba, NHK World Radio Japan, and Sputnik Radio.
From SPAIN- Alison Hughes presents an article from The Independent UK by Patrick Cockburn called "In Middle East Wars It Pays To Be Skeptical." He recalls the first Gulf War story about a baby milk factory in Iraq that was falsely credited with producing biological weapons, and the attacks on anyone who questioned the official story. He compares it to the alleged chemical attacks in Syria and the poisoning in Skripal, and the current pressure for the media and public opinion to conform. Marginalization of dissent is increasingly followed by criminalization. Nicaragua has been rocked by violent protests over planned cuts in public pensions. President Daniel Ortega revoked the reductions but came out looking bad in the fracas. Alison explains the IMF demands that required the cuts, the right-wing encouragement of civil unrest, and the US Congress bill to impede Nicaragua from getting international loans.
From CUBA- In Colombia 30 indigenous and Afro-Colombian human rights activists have been arrested, accused of links to the ELN national liberation army. The French parliament has advanced President Macron's tough new immigration bill. In Greece far-right militants attacked a crowd of asylum seekers leading to riots with anti-fascist activists and police.
From JAPAN- In light of the historic summit between the Koreas, the South has suspended propaganda broadcasts across the military demarcation line. At a G-7 meeting, the acting US Secretary of State has called to keep pressure on North Korea until it is fully denuclearized. Delegates preparing for a 2020 nuclear non-proliferation treaty review conference have clashed over last year's UN nuclear weapon ban treaty. The head of the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons says public action is important to get governments to approve the treaty.
From RUSSIA- Afshin Rattansi and Lembit Opik discuss the Saudi bombing of a wedding party in Yemen that killed 20.
