Kayaktivists stage naval style banner raising at Pentagon against war and fossil fuels

On the 17th of September, the Backbone Campaign, World Without War, the Raging Grannies, and other groups bypassed the usual difficulties of protesting at the Pentagon by taking to the water to raise banners from kayaks.

Kayaktivists condemned the Pentagon's role in wars fought for oil, its huge energy consumption, and the vast number of toxic and superfund sites left behind by their activities.

By using naval rather than ground force tactics, this protest was able to get just outside the Pentagon's formal exclusion zone, and bypass the usual extreme police tactics and demands concerning protest pits, filming, and so on. In all the years antiwar activists have protested or attempted to protest at the Pentagon, apparently this was the first time a waterborne approach has been used.
