Vigil demands release of Purvi Patel, jailed for self-induced abortion

Purvi Patel is serving 20 years of a 46 year "feticide" sentence in Indiana over a use of pills ordered online for a self-induced abortion that left her in the hospital. Donald Trump has called for, then tried to retract his call for imprisoning women like Purvi for illegal abortions. The Susan B Anthony List and other antichoice groups have been attempting to distance themselves from Trump's call for prison terms. On the 21st of April the Susan B Anthony List held a high-profile dinner at the Andrew Mellon Auditoriam on Constitution Ave. Outside, protesters held a vigil demanding the "walk the walk" by issuing a statement calling for Purvi Patel's release.

Texas abortion case draws huge pro-choice protest, smaller right-wing to Supreme Court

On the 2nd of March, the US Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of the Texas abortion clinic restriction law HB2. A lower court upheld a law imposing numerous architectural requirements on clinics and requiring doctors to be affiliated with hospitals. Huge crowds outside the Supreme Court chanted "Stop the Sham" referring to bogus claims this law was meant to protect women from doctors. A much smaller number of right-wingers was buried in this crowd, many of them surrounded by an arm-locked line of pro-choice activists. One of the right-wing speakers was from "Concerned Women for America,"(CWA) which is listed as an anti-Gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Code Pink confronts Secretary of State Kerry over US weapons sales to Saudi Arabia

On the 26th of February, Code Pink released video of Medea Benjamin confronting US Secretary of State Kerry over US sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a Wahhabi theocracy known for whippings and beheadings, with few differences for its subjects from living in Daesh's so-called "caliphate." They spend billions gotten from the world oil market on promoting their fundamentalist visions in Muslim communities around the world and they intervene in countries like Bahrain to support Sunni governments against popular uprisings. The weapons used in Saudi military interventions come from the United States

Baltimore Bloc, allies shut down Pro-Rape "Men's Rights" meetup

On the 6th of February, a "men's rights" meetup organized by Daryush "Roosh" Valizdeh was planned for the Cross Street Market in Baltimore, MD as one of 165 similar meetups on an "International Meetup Day." Roosh is infamous for calling for the legalization of rape as well as for preaching hatred against women in general and GLBT people in particular. The Baltimore Bloc organized a counterprotest against these pro-rape men, and not a single one of them could be found at their Baltimore meetup location.

Pro-choice activists block antiabortion march

On the 22nd of January, pro-choice activsts gathered at noon at the US Supreme Court. They got there ahead of the incoming anti-choice march that harasses the Supreme Court every year on the anniversary of Roe Vs Wade. With the incoming snow one online posting advised people "2' to 3' of snow-wear the tall boots." Perhaps the antichoice marchers could take that one step farther and wear jackboots? When they arrived at the Supreme Court, militant pro-choice activists got into the street and blocked the march

Video from Nov 17 Trans march on 5th and K, Wal-Mart, Union Station

This is video and coverage from DC's Trans Week of Action march on 5th and K, Wal-Mart, and Union Station on November 17, 2015. The 5th and K area used to be used by transgender sex workers until police harassment forced them away so new condos could open. Wal-mart was targetted as they are being sued for firing Transgender employees. Union Station was chosen as the finish as it is an excellent location to educate commuters. A note on messaging: Trangender organizers put this march together along with Blackout DC, and the "Trans Lives Matter" slogan was used only after discussion between Transgender and Black Lives Matter activists in DC

Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil at AU

On the evening of November 19th the Queers and Allies' Trans and Non-Binary Collective at American University held the Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil and Speakout. After speakers at the indoor portion spoke of the severe discrimination, poverty, and widespread murder and police violence faced by transgender people, everyone went outside for a vigil to remember those who have been killed. Flags of remembrance for the fallen were planted in the quad while the whole group held candles in the dark.

Violent arrest at 2nd night of Trans Week of Action street protests

On the 18th of October, Trans Week of Action protesters took to the streets for the second night in a row. This time around, the blockades targeted the area around Target. Police tried to aggressively move traffic past protesters. When protesters stood their ground, one cop responded first with pushing, then with a violent takedown and arrest of an activist perceived as an organizer. Arrest can be a life-threatening experience for any transgender person, so the rest of the protesters were severely agitated by this, ultimately responding by retaking the exact same intersection.

Corporate/assimilationist contingents at Pride clash with message of Stonewall

Capitol Pride 2015 started out with well over a hour of corporate and assimilationist floats. The first mention of Stonewall came about 15 minutes from the end of the parade, courtesy of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Certainly the Wells Fargo contingent, whose sponsor invests in private prisons, was not about to mention Stonewall. That is especially true now that people from Ferguson to Baltimore to Texas are once again fighting the police.
