July Critical Mass reportback

A hot night did not deter DC's Critical Mass bike ride from returning to the streets on July 29, the last Friday of the month. These rides are basically social rides these days, departing from Dupont Circle at shortly after 8PM.

The history of these rides is very long however, dating back to the anarchist-organized rides of the 2001-2003 era. Still earlier there was a series of rides that often took over Beach Drive in the mid 1990's. Those were related to Anacostia-Rock Creek Earth First! and the Car-Free DC organization of the previous round of Clinton years. As the orginal riders moved on, bike messengers and sporting riders began to join the Critical Mass rides and deserve much credit for keeping this tradition alive.
