On the 11th of January, 2002, the Gates of Hell opened for business in Guantanimo Bay, Cuba. Twenty years later, Gitmo is still open and protesters around the world remembered this ugly anniversary. Here in DC, Witness Against Torture and Amnesty International held their annual protest in front of the White House.
Gitmo has now been open through the Bush, Obama, Trump, and now Biden administrations, under new management three times. The abuse and ugliness never changes, though a slow trickle of detainees is being released. Some of the remaining detainees the US has no intention of EVER releasing, yet admits can never be tried for lack of any evidence against them save that generated by torture.
Waterboarding was reintroduced to the modern world at Gitmo and in Iraq. Now it is in use by oppressive regimes all over the world. US Hypocrisy about human rights directly shields the use of this particular torture in all other countries and by all other groups that use it.
