2024 Olympics sought by DC: the Eviction Games?

On the 9th of June, the Washington Post reported that DC is again seeking to host the Summer Olympics, this time in 2024. The bid to host the 2012 Olympics was defeated after protesters disrupted an Olympic Selection Committee event with a smoke flare and heckled the Committee at the grand reopening of the Wilson Building the next day.

"Fitness Tax" draws protest at Wilson Building

On the 3rd of June, staffers and customers from several gyms showed up in front of the Wilson Building to oppose the extension of sales taxes to gyms and health clubs, calling it the "fitness tax." They complained about getting only 18 hours notice of the proposal, one that sank the last time it was introduced.

Jim Graham and Fox News trying to close DC General family shelter

On May 13, Faux News ran a feature segment starring Jim Graham calling for closing the shelter for homeless families with children at DC General. It was one of the ugliest "reports" I have seen on Faux in years.

On the 13th of May, DC residents opposing filling in city-owned McMillan Park with condos and offices protested outside the Zoning commission, then packed the hearing.

Empower DC packs Council hearing on housing authority budget

On the 30th of April, Empower DC brought well over 100 DC public housing residents and supporters to pack Muriel Bowser's hearing on the DC housing authority budget, which contains zero money for repair or renovation of traditional public housing.

Empower DC takes over open house for Union Station rebuild project

The multibillion dollar redevelopment plan for Union Station includes an ugly extra: an "Interim plan" to park idling inter-city busses at Crummel School, in Ivy City. Many residents there already have asthma. On the 15th of August, over half of particpants in an "open house" at Union Station about the proposed "master plan" were from Empower DC.
