Two Earth Day protests rocked DC one after the other. First, Extinction Rebellion DC marched 20 wheelbarrels full of cow manure (literal bullshit) as close to the White House as they could get it and dumped it. Almost immediately afterwards, Power Shift showed up at the Dept of State backing up Gulf Coast residents protesting oil and gas export-and the nearly 200 export pipelines rammed through their homelands.
Extinction Rebellion pointed out that Biden's plan to reduce carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2030— long after he’s out of office. This was called too little, too late. Extinction Rebellion is calling for net-zero carbon emissions by 2025.
With the State Department supporting oil and gas export (under Biden as under Trump), perhaps they should change their name to the "Dept of Snake," for serving up so many Black Snake pipelines. Before Power Shift's Earth Day die-in there, speaker after speaker denounced the sacrifice of the lives of Gulf Coast residents to cancer and other diseases caused by oil spills and chemicals dumped into their home areas by the oil and gas industries. An Indigenous elder gave the industry a particularily scathing review. He tied the current willingness to sacrifice lives to the ongoing genocide and colonialist theft and exploitation aimed at his people. In over 500 years, that does not seem to have changed.
Extinction Rebellion DC released this statement after their earlier protest:
"We've elected another president who can't understand basic science" "Just like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic, Biden is fiddling with dates and targets as the ocean rises, and the world burns. The president has failed to address the immense scale of the planetary emergency. Those travelling first class are still enjoying the party too much to hear the cries of those already drowning in the decks below."
XRDC further pointed out that Biden's climate policies are another "not in my term of office" scam. This in fact points out a fundamental weakness of democracies and dictatorships alike in addressing long and medium term threats. If elected officials vote to pay a price today to stave off flooding of coastal cities in ten years, the price is paid while they are in office, the benefits accrue to their successors. Even dictators can face this problem, save that instead of being voted out over the bills they face overthrow and the consequences of becoming an overthrown dictator. Thus it becomes in the interest of nearly all forms of government to ignore long term and medium term threats and focus on quick fixes.
