Police beat and pepper spray after attempt to pull down Andrew Jackson statue, protesters deploy own shield wall

The June 22 Battle of H st escalated with a late-afternoon attempt to pull down the Andrew Jackson statue in Lafayette Sq. Park Police riot squads broke up this effort in a blizzard of pepper spray and club hits. The police attack over the statue effort the was so violent one person reportedly lost four front teeth to a clubbing. For all their violence, these cops managed to retake only part of H st. Shortly after nightfall a heavy bloc of protesters carrying shields of their own reinforced the front line, leading to a standoff in place.

Police attempt to retake H st fails, protesters barricade and fortify

On the 22nd of June, police pushed protesters off of H st, only to have protesters circle the block and retake the street. As cops fled, protesters set multiple layers of barricade to defend their position.

It all began with a violent police assault to retake H st. Police were driven from this position when protesters marched around the block and came in behind them

Duke Ellington Bridge blocked in protest for murdered Black women

On the 21st of June, Freedom Fighters DC held a "say thir names" vigil on Duke Ellington Bridge, shutting down the bridge for the evening.The rally commemorated Black women who had been murdered, many of them by cops.

Protesters cap Juneteenth by pulling down Confederate statue next to MPD HQ

The 19th of June featured thousands of protesters in the streets of DC for march after march. A massive party took over 14th and U towards evening, and a "Fuck the Police" march set out from the White House at sunset. This march wound it's way to MPD's headquarters-and proceeded to pull down the statue of Confederate general Albert Pike located right next to MPD!

Patriot Front (Nazis) shows up at Lafayette, flees in cars with covered license plates

On the 18th of June, 8 members of the neo-Nazi group Patriot Front showed up at Black Lives Matter Plaza/Lafayette Sq. They didn't stay long when anti-Fascist activists began filming them and a few BLM protesters yelled at them. They fled north to L st, then back to their cars. They drove out of the Colonial Parking garage at 20th and Penn with their license plates covered up.

Freedom Plaza occupied for defunding MPD

On the 15th of June, activists occupied Freedom Plaza with the intention of holding the plaza for 36 hours. This was in response to a City Council hearing concerning MPD's budget for which hundreds attempted to register but very few were ever permitted to speak.

Black Lives Matter repeatedly blocks I-395

The 15th of June featured one of the near-daily blockades of I-395 that have gone on for the better part of a week. In this case, the march started at the same place Trump's stormtroopers fired tear gas at protesters so he could walk across H st to St John's to bluster threats.

Third Saturday of George Floyd marches features strong bicycle cavalry

On the 13th of June, march after march took to the streets of DC for George Floyd. The NJNP march to Mayor Bowser's house was just one of many. A late afternoon march went from Malcolm X Park to Trump Hotel and back. That one featured a strong bicycle cavalry block, which managed to put cops on bicycles to flight and even surround motorcycle cops and escort them out.

No Justice No Pride march to defund MPD brings crowd to Mayor Bowser's house

On the 13th of June, a hundreds strong No Justice No Pride march and motorcade that originated in MD showed up at the home of DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. They were there to demand that MPD be defunded, sex work be legalized, and more. On the approach march a sound system blasted NWA's "Fuck the Police," and at the Mayor's house dancers breakdanced right up to the cops.

Fund Care Not Cops march takes to the streets, heckles Trump Hotel

On the 12th of June, several DC neighborhood based groups backed by Empower DC and Democratic Socialists of America marched from Federal court to Freedom Plaza with a "Fund care not cops" demand. On the way they stopped to boo and heckle Trump Hotel.This is a continuation of two weeks of protests for George Floyd and so many others murdered by police.
