Sen Manchin (D?-WV) confronted at Wharf garage, drives into protesters

On the 4th of November, the climate hunger strikers backed by Sunrise DC confronted Senator Joe Manchin (D?-WV) as he left his multimillion dollar yacht to access the parking garage and drive to Capitol Hill. Protesters followed him into the garage. When protesters surrounded his Masarati, Senator Joe Manchin put the car in gear and drove directly into the protesters blocking his car.

Protesters descend on Supreme Court before oral arguments in TX abortion case

On the 1st of November, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments for their expedited review of the Texas SB-8 antiabortion law. This law empowers private citizens to act as bounty hunters to sue anyone helping anyone get an abortion just 6 weeks after conception. Pro-choice protesters grew in numbers as the dueling protests went on, while the antichoice turnout stayed constant.

Neighbors ask lone counterprotester to turn down music or leave at rally to save McMillan Park

On the 30th of October, opponents of "redevelopment" of McMillan Park into "mixed use" office, upscale retail, and luxury apartments held a rally at 1st and Bryant Sts NE. A single supporter of the developers attempted to counterprotest by playing one song over and over at top volume on a sound system mounted in his car. Neighbors disturbed by the noise demanded he turn it down or leave.

G20 Focuses on Vaccines, Health, Economy and Climate During Rome Summit

President Biden joins G20 heads of state in Rome to discuss COVID response, vaccines, debt, economic crisis and climate policies. This is the first in-person meeting of the leaders since before the onset of the pandemic.

“Decisions by the G20 on the pandemic will shape global health, economic and climate policies for years to come,” shared Eric LeCompte, a United Nations finance expert who heads the religious development group Jubilee USA Network. “The world is waiting for the G20 to provide a plan on getting 70 percent of the globe vaccinated next year."

Poor Peoples Campaign and CASA descend on Supreme Court, Capitol Hill

On the 27th of October, first the Poor People's Campaign (PPC) and then Casa staged protests at the Supreme Court. After PPC marched to the Hart Building for a failed attempt to deliver letters, Casa's activists marched on the same area between the Capitol and the Supreme Court and blocked 1st st NE. In response a torrent of bike cops showed up, seemingly the standard Capitol Police response to ANYTHING.

High Heel Race returns to 17th st after covid-driven 2020 absence

On the 26th of October, the annual Halloween High Heel Race returned to 17th st. The 2020 race was cancelled for covid reasons, that was the only time it did not run. The infamous 1991 police raid on what was then an unofficial event run on Halloween itself provoked a furious response and a mass takeover of 17th st the following year. From then on, the city has held it as an official event prior to Halloween.

Puerto Rico Votes to Bring 4-Year Bankruptcy to an End

Puerto Rico’s Senate and House passed a deal that settles $35 billion in Puerto Rico debt and will save the island two-thirds in debt payments.

"Puerto Rico voted to end the bankruptcy process that the island has gone through for four years," stated Eric LeCompte, the Executive Director of Jubilee USA Network. LeCompte worked with Puerto Rico religious leaders on solving the island's debt crisis since 2015. "With natural disasters, high child poverty rates and uncertain economic forecasts, we are concerned that Puerto Rico will be able to make the debt payments."

Latin America and Caribbean Face Greater Pandemic Vulnerabilities According to New Research Map

A new online map highlights vulnerabilities that countries face in Latin America and the Caribbean. Jubilee USA Network and LATINDADD, two groups working on pandemic response, published the new online database detailing growing challenges faced by developing countries due to the pandemic.  

Climate Strike protests begin again

On the 22nd of October, the youth/student Climate Strike/FridaysForTheFuture protests began again. Here in DC, protesters marched from Union Station to the Capitol, encountering way too many cops there. After the rally there, protesters were set to march to the White House, backing up the five young folks there on hunger strike demanding action on climate chaos and fossil fuels.

Kayaking protesters show up at Sen Manchin's yacht-AGAIN

On the 21st of October, protesters in kayaks returned to Senator Joe Manchin(D-W-Va)'s yacht for the second time this month. This was also the 2nd time this week they were at the Wharf. A police boat threatened to ram kayakers but back off when this bluff was called.
