Police brutality protesters occupy lobby of DC Police headquarters
On the 12th of January, both Ferguson protesters and Guantanimo Bay protesters joined forces to occupy the lobby of DC Police (MPD) headquarters for just over 28 minutes. The 28 minutes symbolized the fact that every 28 hours a Black man, woman, or child is killed by police, security guards, or vigilantes in the US. The occupation was tense but no arrests were made.
The protest began with another Monday vigil in front of the Dept of Justice featuring a speech by a mother of a victim of police murder. This week the vigil was joined by some of the the Guantanimo Bay protesters in orange jumpsuits. At the conclusion of the program at DOJ the entire group took to the streets. Marchers carried three caskets for those murdered by police, marched to and then up the steps of MPD, and laid the coffins on their doorstep. At this time, some of the marchers surged through the doors, and a tense 28 minute+ occupation ensued. Police decided not to make arrests while cameras rolled, and all the activsts were able to safely exit this very dangerous location filled with armed cops.
