Mayor Bowser VETOES Metro fare decriminalization bill

Update Jan 22: DC Council overrides Mayor's veto, fare evasion will be decriminalized unless Congress intervenes. Mayor "more cops more jails" Bowser defeated again.

On the 16th of January, DC Mayor Bowser VETOED the Metro fare decriminalization bill. The bill passed the DC Council by a 10-2 margin, enough to override the Mayor's veto if nobody changes their vote. Metro police have been aggressively targeting Black youth for enforcement and arrest on fare evasion charges. This could perhaps be called "Make Metro White Again.

One of three embattled Congress Heights apartment buildings burns.

For years developer Geoff Griffis and his friends at CityPartners LLC have been trying to evict the tenants of the Congress Heights apartments in SE DC so a "mixed-use" condo and office building could be put up over the Congress Heights Metro. For years these plans have been stalled by tenant protests and activism. Griffis has had protesters at his house and WMATA refused to sell him a key parcel. Now, on the night of Nov 1 to Nov 2, one of the three buildings has burned. Tenants are urgently requesting assistance to replace possessions and repair fire damage.(GoFundMe page) Surely CityPartners LLC will give them nothing-the fire is just too convenient for their plans.

Mock demolition staged at Mayor Bowser's home against DC General demolition near shelter (and kids)

On the 30th of July, supporters of homeless familes living in the DC General shelter showed up in front of the Mayor's home to protest plans to demolish parts of the building before homeless families have moved out of other parts. Demolition can expose children living there to lead dust and other toxins. Apparently the Mayor wants to offer the site to Amazon for their HQ2 project as quickly as possible.
