Police attack using snowplows fails to remove Nellie's protest

On the 30th of July, Boycott Nellie's protesters showed up for the 7th week since Keisha was dragged down the stairs over Pride weekend. The bar was open but sparsely attended. During the protest, snowplows summoned by MPD tried to clear the intersection, one of them coming in straignt-on and honking while others flanked. The plows were halted by advancing protesters and the attack failed.

Extinction Rebellion holds evening "truth blasting parade" against oil/gas pipelines

On the 29th of July, Extinction Rebellion DC held an evening "truth blasting parade" in traffic. The march demanded that Biden's administraton reject new oil and gas pipelines such as Enbridge's Line 3 project.

Speakers demand Cancellation of Line 3 and other pipelines as Red Road to DC totem pole walk arrives

On July 29, the House of Tears Carvers and their allies arrived on the National Mall, bringing a totem pole and ending a journey of thousands of miles. The totem pole was delivered to Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland (who also spoke at the rally) and to the Biden administration. Later speakers demanded that the construction of Enbridge Line 3 and other trespassing pipelines be stopped.

Jubilee USA Statement on World Trade Organization Meeting

The World Trade Organization closed two-day meetings on pandemic response policies that included a proposal to temporarily wave COVID vaccine patents.  

Eric LeCompte, Executive Director of the religious development organization Jubilee USA Network and a United Nations finance expert, releases the following statement on the World Trade Organization meetings:

On Thursday, July 29, Metro's board had been scheduled to vote YES or NO on giving Metro Transit Police power to bar anyone merely accused of a variety of offenses from riding Metro for a prolonged period. On the evening of July 27, furious Black Lives Matter protesters showed up at the fancy Upper NW home of Metro board member Tom Bulger, who could have killed the proposal by voting NO if the vote had taken place as scheduled.

Greene/Gaetz presser for J6 shut down by protesters

On the 27th of July, reps Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, and several others from the MAGAt wing of the GOP attempted to hold a press conference in front of the Dept of Justice concerning the January 6 assault on the US Capitol and apparently on ensuing legal cases. Anti-Trump protesters shut them down cold, forcing an end to the press conference.

WTO Reviews Vaccine Patents and Pandemic Response Options

A proposal in front of the World Trade Organization could make it easier for countries to access COVID vaccines. This week the global trade body reviews the proposal to waive pharmaceutical vaccine patents as part of a menu of trade pandemic response policies. 

“Not enough vaccines are getting to developing countries,” noted Eric LeCompte, Executive Director of the religious development group Jubilee USA Network. “Part of the solution is supporting countries to produce the vaccines that they and other countries desperately need."

On the evening of Friday, July 23, Boycott Nellies protesters returned to 9th and U, the bar having been open since the previous Sunday. This time around, ATV and dirt bike riders provided a thunderous finale in front of the near-empty bar. All the partying was in the streets.

IMF Extends Zero-Interest Lending to Poor Countries

The IMF announced increased zero-interest lending for poor countries. IMF member countries further committed to investigate additional options to extend pandemic aid through 2029, including the selling of IMF gold reserves.

“Poor countries need more support to confront the health and economic devastation caused by the coronavirus,” said Eric LeCompte, Executive Director of the religious development group Jubilee USA Network. "While the IMF action is helpful, it still falls short of delivering the support developing countries need."
