Continuing rain after thunderstorms did NOT stop boycott Nellie's protesters from descending on 9th and U st. Protests over Keisha being dragged down the stairs on Pride weekend are going into their 3ed month.

Pipeline funding banks get Stop Line 3 demos

On the 13th of August, Stop Line 3(Enbridge) protesters showed up at downtown branches of Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase Bank, Citibank, and TD ("Tar Dollar") Bank. At several of the branches protesters succeeded in getting an unmarked team inside to deliver documents about what exactly these banks have been funding.

DC Bike Parties are BACK

On August 11, the DC Bike Parties returned to their traditional 2nd Wed of every month rides that depart Dupont Circle at 8PM. This was after a special July 16th ride on the anniversary of the first DC Bike Party.

Migrants protest at ICE HQ against Biden's deportations

On the 10th of August and under intense heat, migrants protested at the headquarters of ICE against deportations that have continued unabated under the Biden regime. Mijante's promo for the rally declared "When it comes to enforcement, ICE & DHS must value people, not priorities/deportation The ICE guidelines MUST be reframed to center human dignity."

Lockdown halts Mountain Valley Pipeline construction site for 8 hours or more

On the 9th of August, activists opposing fracked gas pipelines and eminent domain for corporate profit locked themselves to construction equipment at a Mountain Valley Pipeline construction site near I-81. The lockdown held for 8 hours, probably ending the working day on the pipeline

Community removes planters installed at 17th st safeway after homeless sweep

On the 3ed of August, DC police and DPW swept an unhoused tent camp from in front of the 17th st safeway. Afterwards, someone installed planters where the tents had been to block their return. The planters did not belong to the DC government-and community members removed ALL of them after twitter posts announced "free planters" at that location. A GoFundMe to replace them failed and was shut down after raising just $100 out of a $2K goal.

Boycott Nellies protesters return for 8th week, bar still mostly empty

On the 6th of August, Boycott Nellie's protesters returned to 9th and U sts for the 8th week out of 9. In mid-July protesters took one week off while Nellies was closed but they responded by reopening. Protests continue while Nellie's Sports Bar sits nearly empty. Soon they will have missed the entire summer reopening, and if Delta leads to another round of bar closures they could go out of business.

Voting rights protesters block roads to National Airport

On the 6th of August, voting rights protesters marched from the MLK Memoral to National Airport, then blocked roads at the airport. They were seeking to make it more difficult for members of Congress to leave town for vacation without finishing their work on voting rights legislation.There were 26 reported arrests.

Line 3 pipeline fight heats up with daily direct actions, serious police aggression in MN

The fight to stop Enbridge's Line 3 tar sands pipeline from crossing Ojibwe lands and potentially destroying the wild rice beds has seriously heated up. For the past week, direct action every day has forced halt after halt to construction, notably stopping Enbridge from "pulling back" pipe under the river by locking to a drilling rig. In response, police have escalated to rubber bullets, chemical weapons, and even rearrests of just released water protectors. There were 19 arrests just on August 4th as water protectors made their stand on the Thief River.

Trade Rep Tai and Major Religious Leaders Hold Historic Meeting on Vaccines and COVID Response

Some of the highest ranking religious leaders met with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai to express support for waiving vaccine patents. The measure, the religious leaders argue, will increase COVID vaccine access for developing countries.
