Real Food Challlenge marches against TPP in Baltimore

On the 12th of January, Real Food Challenge marched to the Baltimore office of Rep Elijah Cummings. A delegation met with Rep Cummings, who until now had not made any public commitments concerning this ugly repeat of NAFTA. Asked to take a stand, Rep Cummings told the delegation he was opposed to the TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. This statement may cost him corporate donations but will win him votes.

Labor Activists storm National Retail Federation demanding living wage and predictable hours

On the 12th of February, many hundreds of labor activsts were in town for the National Jobs With Justice Conference. In late afternoon a massive march left the conference. The march divided into two, with the restarant workers going to the DC Chamber of Commerce and the retail workers marching on the National Retail Federation's DC headquarters. At the National Retail Federation, marchers stormed the building because of this organization's active lobbying against living wage legislation and legislation to stop "just in time" scheduling that leaves workers with unpredictable hours.

by Grassroots Media DC
On January 26, 2016, the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent came to the District of Columbia to hear how African-Americans are being treated in the United States. Individuals were able to give testimony during a town hall meeting arranged by Pan African Community Action. Topics discussed included gentrification, police brutality, labor, environmental racism and gender oppressions. This video is a montage of testimonials regarding the many unarmed Blacks who've been killed by the police, most of whom don't get national attention.

Calvert County still prosecuting anti-LNG export activist for reporting police brutality

Earlier this year, Carling Sothoron and Heather Doyle climbed and hung a banner from a crane at the construction site for Dominion Resources's fracked gas export facility near Cove Point, Maryland. During the extraction and arrest, both Carling and Heather, who are expert climbers, experienced an unsafe extraction by the Calvert County Sheriff's Office and Heather was assaulted during her arrest. After the court proceedings for their action Heather filed an official complaint about their treatment. Instead of holding its officers accountable, Calvert County is now prosecuting Heather for “making false statements to an officer”.

Baltimore Bloc, allies shut down Pro-Rape "Men's Rights" meetup

On the 6th of February, a "men's rights" meetup organized by Daryush "Roosh" Valizdeh was planned for the Cross Street Market in Baltimore, MD as one of 165 similar meetups on an "International Meetup Day." Roosh is infamous for calling for the legalization of rape as well as for preaching hatred against women in general and GLBT people in particular. The Baltimore Bloc organized a counterprotest against these pro-rape men, and not a single one of them could be found at their Baltimore meetup location.

Labor activsts and Vegans protest TPP at Baltimore World Trade Center

On the 4th of February, a mix of labor activists and area vegans showed up at the Baltimore World Trade Center to protest the signing of the TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is a yet to be ratified trade deal that a former steelworker described as "Nafta on steroids" before singing a song of dissent at this protest. All the worst provisions of the trade deal that ate som many jobs (including his) are present in the TPP and as bad or worse than in NAFTA and so many more countries are affected.

Protest at White House against TPP signing-hours before signing and NZ street blockades

On the 3rd of February Washington Time or Feb 4 New Zealand time, Obama was in Sky City Casino in New Zealand to sign the TPP or Trans-Pacific Partnership at 5:30PM EST. This is an ugly NAFTA style trade deal the likes of which have not been seen since the FTAA, CAFTA, and the failed Seattle/Doha trade talks. As protesters and heads of state gathered in New Zealand, a broad coalition of groups sent representatives to a protest in front of the White House calling the trade deal "betrayal."

Migrant advocates deliver petitions against Obama's ICE raids to White House

On the 2nd of February, a number of immigrant rights groups held a "Stop the Raids" press conference outside the White House before delivering over 130,000 signed petitions. The petitions were actually accepted by two White House staffers and sniffed by the dog before being taken inside. Usually White House petition deliveries are refused, and often that leads to civil disobedience blockades. Before the delivery, speaker after speaker denounced the frankly terroristic raids on immigrants at their homes by ICE. Although not mentioned at this rally, many suspect Obama is doing this in response to Trump's hatemongering demands.

White House Peace Vigil lives on after Concepcion's passing

While the passing of Concepcion Piccolo was widely reported in the mainstream press, there has been not one word there about the continuing of the White House Peace Vigil, which lives on. Just when the National Park Service and the White House thought kings and dictators would be able to visit the White House without seeing a reminder of what their policies can do, just when they thought it was "safe to go back in the water," the vigil continues.

Skanska files SLAPP suit seeking injunction against vivisection protests

In Portland, Oregon, two executives at Skanska have filed papers with the Washington County Courthouse in Hillsboro, OR seeking an injunction against 4 animal rights activsts and the "No New Animal Lab" campaign against Skanska's project to build a vivisection laboratory for the University of Washington. This injunction would not bind activists in DC, New York, or anywhere but in the jurisdiction in question and only from that one organization. No New Animal Lab has counterfiled a anti-SLAPP Special Motion to Strike against Skanska.
