"Wellness check" and enforcement patrols going door to door in Montgomery County neighborhood

I currently live in Maryland and an experience I had on April 10, 2020 underscored exactly how invasive the lengths to ensure compliance with the current stay at home order (to halt the spread of the coronavirus has become.

I was outdoors cleaning up the front yard, when a blue/gray compact vehicle passed this house the third time. I wondered if the driver were lost. Two men with some kind of uniform pin on their shirts were in the front seat. Two women also with badges were in the back. They walked fairly close to the house and I warned them I had neither mask or gloves.

Escape From Maryland: An activist's story

I write this as one of many thousands of US residents driven from their homes by full-on, hard authoritarian government response to the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, the 30th of March, Maryland Governor Hogan imposed one of the most severe stay at home orders in the entire US, brazenly threatening residents with prison if they left home for any but a few reasons. With hours until it went into effect, I hurredly packed up the things I care about the most and escaped from MD with hours to spare.

Luke's observations on the "toilet paper zombies" stripping store shelves

Your favorite antifa Luke on the toilet paper crisis. "Toilet paper zombies" seem to think they will benefit from a 6 month stockpile of toilet paper against a possible 2-week quarantine. Coronavirus does NOT cause diarrhea folks!

Anti-migrant hate rally in Rockville draws huge counterprotest

On the 13th of September, an anti-migrant hate rally (some participants in MAGA hats) in front of the Montgomery County Council's offices drew a much larger counterprotest. The hate rally was demanding Montgomery County hold jail inmates for ICE detainers, which is not the current practice. The hypocrisy of the far-right was on full display, as they defied police orders to stay off the steps of the building.

On the 20th of July, residents of W Va, Virginia, Maryland, and DC opposing Rockwool's planned factory in W Virigina built a mock Rockwool factory inside the Lowes hardware store in Gaithersburg. The mock plant was built from Rockwool's own product and was no more welcome there than the real one is in W Va across from an elementary school.

Eminent domain suit in Federal court against MD for rejected Potomac Pipeline draws protest

On the 30th of May, water protectors opposing the TransCanada/Columbia Gas "Western Panhandle Extension" or Potomac Pipeline gathered at the Western MD rail trail near the proposed river crossing. MD's Board of Public Works voted unanimously to deny an easement for the pipeline to cross state-owned land in January. TransCanada's subsidiary Columbia Gas Transmission has responded with a lawsuit seeking federal condemnation (eminent domain) of MD owned land so it can be turned over to them to resurrect the Potomac Pipeline.
