MD General Assembly passes fracking ban backed by Governor

On Monday, the 27th of March, the MD General Assembly gave final approval to legislation permanently banning gas fracking in MD. The bill now moves to the governor's desk for signature. Given that it was support from Gov Hogan (under intense public pressure) that got the bill moving in the Senate, the governor is expected to sign the bill into law. This will make MD the 3rd state to ban fracking, in direct defiance of Trump's pro fossil fuel agenda.

13 arrested in Annapolis fracking protest

On the 16th of March, 13 anti-fracking activists were arrested in front of the MD statehouse as they demanded the Senate pass a statewide, permanent ban on gas fracking. The bill has passed the House of Delegates by a veto-proof margin, but state Sen Mike Miller is reportedly sitting on the bill in the Senate. In addition, state Sen. Joan Carter Conway is suspected of planning to keep it off the agenda in committee

Mass March in Annapolis demands statewide ban on gas fracking

On the 2nd of March, MD residents gathered in Annapolis to demand that the General Assembly pass and Governor Hogan sign legislation to ban gas fracking outright in MD. A moratorium on fracking expires this fall, and Governor Hogan has pledged to start fracking in MD "as soon as possible."

Russian flags with Trump's name on them given out-and waved-at CPAC

On the 24th of February, "left-wing operatives" were expelled from CPAC after sucessfully infiltrating this notorious right-wing convention and distributing Russian flags emblazoned with Trump's name. Unaware of the nature or source of the flags, many at the Conservative Political Action Committee or CPAC accepted the flags and began waving them before staffers managed to round them up.

Protests in Annapolis demand fracking ban not Muslim ban

On the first of February, two related protests took place in Annapolis as Governor Hogan gave the state equivalent of the State of the Union speech. The first was a rally outside demanding that MD ban gas fracking outright, making the current moratorium permanent. In addition, a small crew planned to set up a banner inside demanding that Gov Hogan take a stand against Trump's travel and refugee ban on Muslims. They got in, found the action impossible, and set up the banner outside as delegates left

CCAN Polar Bear Plunge protests climate change, raises funds for CCAN

On the 28th of January, Chesapeake Climate Action Network held their annual midwinter Polar Bear Plunge on the banks of the Potomac River at National Harbor. One of the speakers was DC Councilmember Mary Cheh, who exhorted the crowd to "resist, resist, resist" the Trump agenda, and vowed to make the White House pay for carbon-priced electricity.

Banners dropped over Beltway in Day 3 of Resistance to Trump's regime

Jan 22 is Donald Chump's 3rd day in office and acts of resistance continue. On I-495 (Capitol Beltway) between Ga Ave and Connecticut Ave a pair of banners were dropped, one facing each direction. The banner facing the eastbound lanes reads "Love Trumps Hate" and a banner facing the westbound lanes reads "Dump Trump." Trump is already becoming extraordinarily dangerous. His neo-Nazi buddy Richard Spencer (who got punched during the Inauguration) is challenging Trump to make overtly confronting anti-Fascist activists the first test of his reign. This is just like the old "first they came for the Communists" situation except that anarchists and other progressives are also being targetted.

Counterinaugural protests, disruption, police attacks continue, parade marches unuusally late

On the 20th of January, police continued to fire flashbangs and pepper spray at determined protesters who refused to yield the streets hours after a potential next Hitler, Donald Trump, had been sworn into office. Cops reported "shooting at everybody" with chemical weapons. Anti-fascist fighters took losses to a mass arrest but there is a report that Richard Spencer got punched, and at least one limousine was attacked and set on fire. Meanwhile, the Inaugural parade did not start until 3:55PM, hours later than normal.l

U-MD students walk out for protection of students in marginalized groups

On the 17th of November, the recent wave of student walkouts continued with the #ProtectUMD walkout at University of MD. Although not billed as an anti-Trump walkout, students are demanding that members of marginalized groups such as African-Americans, Muslims, immigrants, and GLBT students be protected from discrimination and hate crimes. That is in direct contravention to the Trump agenda of white nationalism.
