Nearly unanimous opposition at fracked gas compressor station hearing in Charles County, MD

On the 28th of March, the MD Dept of the Environment (MDE) held a public hearing in Charles County, MD concerning Dominion's proposed fracked gas compressor station. Residents from the area placed at risk by the project and their supporters spoke unanimously against the project. Near the beginning, someone projected scenes of what a potential explosion at the compressor station on the walls of the room. MDE tried to order the projector turned off while the packed room erupted into yelling.

Mothers against the Potomac Pipeline arrested at MD State House

On the 14th of March, Mothers against the Potomac Pipeline blocked one of the MD State House doorways and the blockaders were arrested. This was just days before Governor Hogan is expected to make a decision about whether or not to permit the Potomac Pipeline to proceed.

Environmentalists rally in Annapolis for 50% renewable energy mandate

On the 10th of January, environmentalists gathered in Annapolis, MD to demand that the General Assembly pass the Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2018, mandating that 50% of energy used in the state come from renewables such as solar and wind. The existing Clean Energy Jobs Act calls for 25% renewables by 2020, now climate, environmental justice, and faith activists are asking the state to double down with 50% by 2030.

Cops demand ID for residents to enter own block in W Baltimore

As of the 19th of November, Baltimore Police are holding the 500 block of Shroeder (at Edmondson & Schroeder) under armed occupation, with at least 9 police cars on site and residents of the block required to show ID proving an address on the block to enter. Residents without ID presumably can leave but cannot return to their own homes.

Update Nov 22:The "crime scene" is no longer active. Turns out Detective Suiter was killed with his own gun, in a no-cameras area, one day before he was to testify before a grand jury against a squad of indicted cops.

Hundreds protest on Rumsey Bridge against Potomac Pipeline

On the 14th of October, over 350 people participated in "Hands Across the Potomac, a protest against TransCanada's proposed Potomac Pipeline for fracked gas. After assembling in Shepherdstown, W Va for speakers, protesters marched onto the Rumsey Bridge over the Potomac, lining the downstream rail from W Va to MD.

Immigrant youth stage pro-DACA skit at Univ of MD as supporters block roads

On the 29th of August, immigrant youth staged a skit simulating an ICE raid on a family in the center circle of University of MD's campus roads. Supporters including area antifascists blockaded the roads around the circle. The protest held the streets and circle for 11 minutes, symbolising 11 million people at risk for deportation under the Donald Trump regime.

IWW sucessfully unionizes Takoma Park Food Co-op

On Sunday, the 20th of August, workers at the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op also known as the Takoma Park food co-op voted to unionize with the DC Chapter of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Pro-Indigenous activst takes sledgehammer to Columbus monument in Baltimore

Early AM on August 21, a pro-Indigenous activist took a sledgehammer to Baltimore's oldest monument to racist, murdering, slave-trading Christopher Columbus. Cities can remove monuments to slavery and murder or people are going to do it for them, their choice.

Indivisible protests in Olney against Nazi hate

On the 20th of August, Olney residents organized by Indivisible protested at the corner of Ga Ave and Rt 108 against the torches and hate of the Nazis in Charlottesville, VA. Indivisible is a network of groups that seeks to become the Democrat's counter to the Tea Party.

Update: MD officially bans fracking with Gov's signature

On the 4th of April, MD Governor Hogan signed the permanent fracking ban bill into law, making MD the 3rd state in the US to ban hydraulic fracturing for gas.
